

3DNES, a new web-based emulator for the Nintendo Entertainment System that displays games as if they were made in 3D, has been publicly released in beta form. As you can see in the video above, it isn't always perfect, but man does Dr. Mario and Mega Man look damned impressive...

Looks like it works on the same principle as some 3D printers where they stack and stack flat surfaces until they get a larger object. or maybe they simply take the 2d block and map it over a 3d object that they can ad depth to after the fact.
That said it seems to have a wonky z buffering setup to help it know what should protrude and what shouldn't. See the mountains below. A rule of thumb should be if It has collision properties with it then protrude it.
